About Montessori Education

Dr. Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori teaching method, believed that no human being is educated by another person. A truly educated individual continues learning long after the hours and years he or she spends in the classroom, because they are motivated from within, by a natural curiosity and love for knowledge. Dr. Montessori therefore concluded, that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-selected course of studies, but rather to cultivate his or her own natural desire to learn. In the Montessori classroom, this objective is approached in two ways:  First, by allowing each child to experience the excitement of learning by his or her own choice rather than being forced; and Second, by helping them to perfect their own natural tools for learning so that their abilities will be at a maximum level in future learning situations. The Montessori materials used in our school serve this dual long-range purpose, in addition to the immediate purpose of giving specific information to the child.

The Basic Montessori Classroom

Practical life – The practical life program in our school includes such activities as washing, polishing, sorting, fastening garments, and measuring solids and liquids. Observing order, which is an important milestone in a young child’s development, is stressed through the completion of each practical life task.  Children enhance their fine muscle coordination and increase their power of concentration by completing each task. Practical life activities help children achieve independence by learning responsibility for their own everyday tasks.

Sensorial – By means of their own five senses, children explore their world. The sensorial materials alert the senses of the child to discriminate contrasts, identities, and small variations in form. The program materials allow the child to see and smell these and focus on one concept at a time. When using the sensorial materials, the children work from left to right as an indirect preparation for reading and writing.

Science & Geography – Our Montessori program offers age-appropriate ideas and information about science and geography in our world. Children begin by learning the differences between living and non-living things in our science program and the elementary properties of land and water in our geography program.

Language, Reading and Writing – Through language, children learn to communicate with those around them. They accomplish this through speaking, reading and writing.  Utilizing the vocabulary materials in our school and having the basic sounds of the alphabet from the lessons of our teaching staff, students will begin to rapidly add new words to their spoken language.

Math – The basis of mathematics in our Montessori school is sensorial experience.  Children begin to learn number concepts through manipulation of various Montessori materials.. The process of mathematics is stressed rather than computation of numbers.  Children proceed in our program from using familiar mathematical materials to learning abstract concepts.

Enrollment – New applications are presently being accepted for children ages 3 years old (potty trained) through 5 years old and Elementary first through eighth grade.

Parents are encouraged to visit the school facilities with their child before enrollment. An enrollment packet will be given to parents at that time.
